EMERGENCY BREAKING [Back to Motorcycle Riding Techniques] Most riders take their braking skills for granted. But, when it comes to braking in a panic situation, many riders fail to stop effectively. Thankfully, panic braking situations are relatively rare, but this can also make us complacent. To keep emergency braking skills sharp and ready for action, it is very important to practice so that your muscles will know exactly how much brake pressure to apply to stop in the shortest possible distance.
Braking in Corners It's generally smart to avoid braking in turns, but it becomes necessary if a mid-corner hazard appears. Many riders never practice braking in turns, which is unfortunate, because many crashes could have been avoided had the rider been skilled at mid-corner braking techniques. Since you don't have enough traction to brake hard while leaned, you must learn to brake without causing a skid. There are two corner braking techniques: you can either straighten before applying the brakes or apply the brakes lightly at first and gradually apply more brake pressure as the bike straightens. |
